Artist statement:
For my exquisite corpse soundscape project, I wanted to give the listeners a horror-like experience. I wanted the whole clip to feel like the listener was in the first person. The soundscape begins with the sound of first-person footsteps. Throughout the piece, the listener is constantly reminded by his/hers own breath. Then there is a slight creak of a door opening, transporting the listener to a mysterious, disturbing environment. As the door slams shut and locks behind them, the sense of being confined grows. The sounds of creaky flooring, leaky pipes, and random eerie noises were made to heighten stress and create a sense that something bad was coming.
Suddenly, the sound gets chaotic, and it is almost hard to keep the headphones on. This was made to heighten the situation and warn the listeners that something bad was coming. After this noise, it becomes dead silent and a strange distorted noise becomes louder only for a terrible breath to appear. This is the first sighting of the "monster". After this, you can hear something coming towards you and consuming something in the distance. The listener, now in survival mode, makes a desperate escape, with sounds that resemble the shaving off of metal bars, and even a blow torcher, as if breaking out of a prison(like the scene in Shawshank redemption). The work ends with the sound of a car door slamming shut and the listener driving away to safety.
This was my first experience using Adobe Audition and there definetaly was a learning curve. I have always wanted to produce my own sounds/music as it is a big passion of mine. Despite the difficulties, I liked experimenting with sound design and pushing myself to produce something that conveyed genuine fear and suspense.
