The first thing that came to my mind when thinking about the central theme to my zine was war. One of my best friends from home was in the Army and was stationed at the Schofield Barracks on the island of Oahu Hawaii for 3 years. Schofield Barracks has a famous history to it because it was built with the primary goal to provide a base for the Army dedicated to mobile defense of Hawaii, specifically Pearl Harbor. Pearl Harbor was attacked many years later by Japanese forces which was one of the primary reasons that lead the USA to enter WWII. Although I have never been to war, nor in the army, I have always been super fascinated by it. Being a civilian, majority of the time when I have seen news about war its never good. That being said I decided to do my topic on the horrors of war
When in class, I was inspired by a specific zine. This zine was a small flip book with a specific shape that never changed but the background and what was inside the shape changed with every page. I was inspired by this because of its creative approach, and it was something that I have never seen before. I am deciding to also do a small flip book with a similar concept and making the dimensions 3inch x 3 inch (the same size as a post it note). In the past year, there has been a meme of a solider that I have seen repetitively over my social media accounts. I have the idea to use that photo, more specially the outline of the soldiers face/body, and tell a story of a soldiers life and everything that comes with it (PTSD)
