Artist Statement:
For my Zine project, I concentrated on the hardships of war, with a popular soldier meme as the core theme. I was aiming to create a flip book, but the loose sheets made this difficult, and was something I tried to combat with many different printing methods. I modified the premise by having the book's final pages spin through the soldier's "mind" by cutting up his body on other pages so the reader could unlock what he was feeling and thinking. I wanted to have a unique element to this piece. I liked how this adjustment brought an interactive element to the project, enabling spectators to engage with the soldier's internal experiences. I also tried changing the color schemes between the first half, before the war (Blue), and the second half (Black). I did this to add an element of color and try to show the viewer different indicators of this transition of horror.
I had never used Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop before, so this project was a valuable learning experience. Navigating these interfaces was difficult at first, but with lessons and experimenting, I gradually became more comfortable. So theoretically everything I did in Illustrator and Photoshop was something that I learned throughout this project.
Despite my poor technical skills with Adobe, I believe I made my best effort. For me, the approach almost seemed similar to learning a new language(not as bad though), especially when I wasn't sure how to create certain results. I'm pleased with the overall results, but there's obviously always space for growth. If I were to do this project again, I would look for ways to strengthen the Zine's physical structure and develop my digital skills so that they better match my vision. Despite the challenges, I am proud of the progress I have made and look forward to continuing to improve my skills.
